MAKING YOUR APPLICATION

Applications to the David Scholars programs for participation in 2008/2009 are due on

Friday, April 4, 2008
by 4:00 PM
in 301B Campbell Hall

These application guidelines below are included in the on-line application

How to Apply

Please submit the following:

(1) an application (can be accessed by clicking here)

(2) transcript of all your college work. (A Bear Facts transcript with your name and ID option is acceptable for the UCB portion of your work. You will be required to submit an official, confirming transcript if you are selected as a winner.)

(3) a brief narrative of the development of your interest in science; how did you come to be interested in research? (no more than one page)

(4) in one or two sentences, a description of your post-graduation plans as related to science.

(5) a proposal for independent research in a faculty lab commencing in summer 2008 (no more than three pages)

Note: You may combine 3, 4 and 5 into one statement if it helps you to explain your project or your development more clearly.

(6) one letter of recommendation is required: it should be from a faculty member or instructor who can address your abilities in the classroom or lab;

(7) if you are a junior applicant (incoming senior) a "faculty agreement" from the faculty member who has agreed to give you a place to complete your research in his or her lab; if you are a sophomore applicant and you have already been promised a place in a lab, you should also submit an agreement form.

(8) a copy of your most recent financial aid award letter (a Bear Facts copy of your award is acceptable)

All materials are due by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008 in 301B Campbell Hall.
 

Selection of a laboratory

Students can work with any regular faculty member in the biological, chemical, physical, or environmental sciences on the Berkeley campus, including Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories.

• Sophomore applicants do not need to have a research position in a laboratory prior to applying for the research award. The awardee will be responsible for obtaining a laboratory position before the summer award period starts.
• Junior applicants should have a confirmed position in a laboratory at the time of application.
