I want to apply to the Haas Scholars Program -- how should I proceed?

(Current as of 2/1/08)

No mentor or topic yet? Come to Workshop A for hints on how to find one (Schedule here) or read the hints here.

The short version of how to proceed with the application is below.

1) complete the eligibility and commitment screens of the application after reading this page to which the application is linked, to make sure you can comply with all of the program's requirements. Mentor responsibilities and privileges are described here, and you should also make sure your mentor is willing to take this on.

2) Once you've filled out those two screens, please send me by e-mail your available times for three consecutive days so that we can meet briefly. You'll run your project idea by me, get a sample proposal and get contact info for current scholars, and have a chance to ask me questions.

3) write your proposal (see guidelines) and start showing drafts to your labmates (first) -- if you are in a lab-- and then to me, once your labmates are happy with it. Sooner is better, since you want a good draft to be in your mentor's hands by February 4 or so (for 2008 application deadline), so s/he can write a strong recommendation that specifically references your project. You may also want to attend a Workshop B (How to write a proposal). Three rounds of feedback/revision are recommended to create a good proposal.

4) To request a proposal-reading appointment, please send me an e-mail, with your proposal attached, and including your open times for three consecutive days. It is essential that your mentor also read your drafts and give you critical comments.

5) Complete and submit the entire online application; gather up all the pieces of your application (see this checklist), and bring them to me in 345 Campbell Hall before 4:00 on Tuesday, February 19. Remember that Monday, February 18 is a holiday so I won't be able to answer your questions then.

I look forward to meeting you soon,

Leah Carroll, Haas Scholars Program Coordinator
