Research Workshops open to all undergraduate researchers, late summer through February/March of each academic year

Workshop A: How to Get Started in Undergraduate Research

Workshop B: How to Write a Research Proposal

Level C: Refining the Research Proposal through Individual Advising

Workshop A: How to Get Started in Undergraduate Research

What will be covered?

This workshop will give you a broad overview of why and how to get started planning for an original research or creative project as an undergraduate. Topics to be covered include:

  • exploring your intellectual interests;
  • finding a faculty mentor or sponsor;
  • eligibility, application requirements, and deadlines for potential funding sources;
  • planning ahead for a successful application.

Who should attend?.

This workshop is open to all students in any discipline. Freshmen and sophomores, as well as upperclass students, are strongly encouraged to attend.

When is the next workshop A?

Workshops are offered on a regular basis from the late summer through February. See this page for upcoming times, dates, and locations.

Workshop B: How to Write a Research Proposal

What will be covered?

This workshop will cover the basics of writing a research proposal for students in all disciplines. Topics to be covered include:

  • defining your research question;
  • developing a project plan;
  • presenting your qualifications;
  • creating a budget.

Who should attend?

You should attend this workshop if you are an undergraduate at UC Berkeley who is considering any or all of the following options:

  • writing a senior honors thesis;
  • applying for research funding from the Robert & Colleen Haas Scholars Program, a travel grant, or any other funding source/fellowship. Refer to Undergraduate Research Homepage for more information on these opportunities.
  • applying to graduate school for advanced study in an academic field, as you will probably be writing grant proposals in graduate school;
  • pursuing a career in research.

The workshop is open to all students in any discipline or class level, although you should come to the workshop with a specific topic in mind. It is particularly geared for upperclass students, who already have a broadly defined area of research interest and are interested in focussing and refining their research goals. Students are encouraged to attend Workshop A first.

When is the next workshop B?

Workshops are offered on a regular basis from the late summer through March. See this page for upcoming times, dates, and locations.

Level C: Refining the Research Proposal through One-on-one Advising

What will be covered?

These individual advising sessions will help you refine your research proposal draft, with particular attention to the following:

  • justifying your budget
  • crafting a cogent statement of purpose
  • identifying typical proposal weaknesses (and strategies for correcting them!)
  • providing you with a successful sample proposal in an area similar to yours.

Who should participate?

These individual advising sessions are geared for students who have already attended Workshop B and/or who have a draft proposal in hand. If you are applying for a program other than the Haas Scholars Program, you should probably ask the program coordinator of that program for advice first, but the Haas Scholars Program coordinator is also sometimes available for additional consultation.

Can't attend a scheduled workshop?

Individual advising is available on an on-going basis by contacting the Program Coordinator, Wendy Muse Sinek. However, before making such an individual appointment, you should read the workshop materials, which are posted on this page:
