Lena Salaymeh ( a double major in Comparative Literature and Near Eastern Studies) presented her research on literary and spatial reconstructions of Beirut as part of a panel entitled "Where Borders Cease: Narratives of Hybrid Identities." Lena was awarded the departmental citation for the outstanding student in both of her majors at her graduation in May 2000 and received a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Jordan in 2000-2001. |

| New Haas Scholar John Perng (EECS Major) conversed with Professor Ken Sauer (Chemistry) over lunch at the Conference. Professor Sauer sat on the selection committee for the incoming 2000-2001 cohort, who were honored at the New Scholars' Reception that evening. |
