Lijia Xie (Interdisciplinary Studies Field)
“Beyond Holding Up the Sky: Beijing Women in the Era of the Olympic Games”
Sponsor: Professor Geoffrey G. O’Brien, English

Project Description

Poststructuralist theories of a unique women's language meet the New Sentence of Language poets in guiding Lijia's project. She will construct 40-60 poems fueled by her travel to Beijing to study ritualistic performances of gender by Beijing women, as seen under the scope of the 2008 Chinese Olympics project. In her poems she will integrate myths of an idealized New China with a different strain of myths of the Chinese Woman, from the perspective of a Beijing-born Chinese American woman. By employing poetic devices that force the reader to create linkages within the text, this collection seeks to incorporate the reader into a transnational project of creating a feminine text contextually specific to an urban Chinese modernity.
