2009 Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships in Science by The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) - The Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program provides opportunities for faculty mentors to support promising undergraduates. Established in the summer of 1990, the program facilitates a diversity of research opportunities that allow students at primarily undergraduate institutions to experience first-hand the excitement and challenges of careers in natural and social science, mathematics, and engineering. The Program links student, faculty mentor, and college or university with a sponsor, thus providing an association not otherwise possible. Depending upon our sources, fellowships will be between $3000 and $5000. Each fellowship provides funding for a student stipend and may provide additional support for travel, faculty honorarium, and equipment expenses.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) offers undergraduates opportunities to participate in materials research projects for ten weeks during the summer. Students receive a specific research project assignment, and then work closely with faculty, post doctorates, and graduate students. Seminars, lunches, and events are coordinated for undergraduates to work and socialize. Many MRSECs focus this program on students from primarily undergraduate institutions. Opportunities for forefront research in these institutions are often limited or unavailable. The REU program further encourages graduate and professional careers in science. Women and members of under-represented minorities are especially welcome. See individual MRSEC web sites for further details.

National Science Foundation: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. A partnership with the Department of Defense supports REU Sites in DoD-relevant research areas. (2) REU Supplements may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements.
Undergraduate student participants in either Sites or Supplements must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
