Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) offers undergraduates opportunities to participate in materials research projects for ten weeks during the summer. Students receive a specific research project assignment, and then work closely with faculty, post doctorates, and graduate students. Seminars, lunches, and events are coordinated for undergraduates to work and socialize. Many MRSECs focus this program on students from primarily undergraduate institutions. Opportunities for forefront research in these institutions are often limited or unavailable. The REU program further encourages graduate and professional careers in science. Women and members of under-represented minorities are especially welcome. See individual MRSEC web sites for further details.

National Science Foundation: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. A partnership with the Department of Defense supports REU Sites in DoD-relevant research areas. (2) REU Supplements may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements.
Undergraduate student participants in either Sites or Supplements must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.

NIDRR Scholars ProgramThe NIDRR Scholars Program is designed to provide internship opportunities in disability and rehabilitation research for undergraduate students with disabilities. Each year, NIDRR provides funding for this program to projects and centers. The intent of the program is to enable students to gain practical experience in ongoing research, thereby preparing them for careers in disability and rehabilitation research. The duration of the internship is one semester and the students are required to work 20 hours per week. Individuals interested in opportunities under the NIDRR Scholars Program may contact projects funded under NIDRRS' Model Systems, Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers or Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers programs to learn if the project in which they are interested is participating in the program.

SOCIAL SCIENCES, INCLUDING PSYCHOLOGY/COGNITIVE SCIENCE
The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) is a paid summer fellowship designed to foster the entrance of talented students from diverse backgrounds within the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts into graduate school and faculty positions in U.S. colleges and universities. More broadly, the program seeks to increase the presence of minorities and others who demonstrate a commitment to eradicating racial disparities in graduate school and eventually in academic ranks. The program serves the related goals of providing role models for all youth and structuring campus environments so that they will be more conducive to improved racial and ethnic relations. Each summer, the program brings a cohort of 18-22 undergraduates (rising juniors and seniors) to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus for an intensive, ten-week research experience. Students are expected to develop a 20-page research project under the guidance of a university faculty mentor with whom they are paired according to areas of study and research interests. In addition to meeting several times a week with faculty mentors, students will attend weekly seminars where they will present their research and discuss that of faculty and other students in the program, receive required biweekly instruction in preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), attend biweekly writing workshops, and participate in a variety of informative workshops, social events and conferences designed to expose them to the graduate experience. Participants will submit their final research paper based on their project and must receive approval through the signature of their faculty mentor.
