The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship/L&S program (SURF/L&S) is designed to allow Berkeley undergraduates in the College of Letters and Science to spend the summer doing concentrated research in preparation for a senior thesis or another major capstone research project. In Summer 2012 fellows will receive a $3,250 summer stipend, which is intended to cover basic living expenses for two months. SURF Fellows receive an additional $250 when they complete projects and graduate as scheduled. Students with need-based financial aid may be eligible for additional funds. For summer of 2012 we anticipate funding about forty students.

*****

We are pleased to announce a new program, SURF/Rose Hills, to be run parallel to SURF L&S, to allow students in certain mathematics, science, and engineering majors in the colleges of L&S, Natural Resources, Engineering, and Chemistry. to immerse themselves in full-time research over the summer. Thanks to the generous support of The Rose Hills Foundation, we are now able to offer fellowships for up to $6,000: $5,000 for the student, and $950 for supplies. This can be either:
a) funding for sophomores or juniors looking for a research experience under the guidance of a UC Berkeley or UCSF faculty member during the summer preceding their junior year; or
b) funding for juniors planning to conduct independent research in preparation for an honors thesis. Junior applicants proposing an independent project will receive selection preference over juniors proposing faculty-initiated research, but we anticipate being able to fund most eligible and qualified applicants. A total of 42 students will be funded for summer 2012.

Additional benefits of both programs

In addition to receiving funding, each summer fellow will be assigned to a research cluster, which will meet weekly throughout the summer. In the cluster you will find a community of undergraduate researchers with similar interests and problems, as well as a cluster mentor, an experienced researcher to help guide your efforts. Primary guidance in research will come from individual faculty mentors, but most students have found it useful to meet with other students who are grappling with related research issues. SURF fellows also have the opportunity to make a research presentation or present a poster at the SURF conference on August 20-21, 2012.
