Welcome to the URAP apprentice application for Fall 2008

A research apprenticeship is a great way to explore a field, build research skills, and develop a working relationship with a faculty member. There are several things you should do BEFORE you apply that can lead to a good match and a successful apprenticeship:

• Read the project listings carefully. Do you understand what the project is about? Do you have the starting qualifications? Do you have a strong interest in this project?
• Examine your time commitments for the term. Will you be able to devote at least 3 hours per week (or the required minimum) over the course of the term?
• Review your priorities. Once you accept a research apprenticeship, you are expected to continue for the full semester (longer, in a few specified cases).

You should apply only to projects for which you have the qualifications and commitment. Choose carefully: you may not apply to more than three faculty.

There are new projects each semester. If you don’t see one that interests you this semester, try again next term.

Making your application

Although you must enter your application data online, you must activate your application by submitting paper copy DIRECTLY to the faculty member's departmental mailbox by the deadline: Friday, September 12th, 2008, at 4 pm.

A separate application is required for each faculty member (if a faculty member lists multiple projects you should indicate which projects you are most interested in). Although you may return to make additional applications later, your best plan is to complete your applications in one session. You will save time because you will need to enter contact information and data only once.

For each apprenticeship you will need to submit:

• a printout of the on-line application including:
  • your contact information and data
  • your statement of interest (limited to 400 words)
• a copy of your transcript. Retrieve your transcripts from Bear Facts NOW, not while you are in the application pages. Be sure that your name displays on the printout.

To complete your online application, you will need to be at a computer where you can PRINT from the browser. If you cannot print now, you should wait and apply when you have a printer available.
