The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) pairs faculty who need research assistance with undergraduates eager to engage in advanced research. For faculty who take on this serious mentoring role, small grants (up to $500 per academic year) are available to pay for expenses incurred in bringing the undergraduate into the project. Limited summer funds are also available. For more information see the Faculty Handbook, below. NEWS: URAP now operates through a personalized web-based "portal" that is created for each faculty member. Your portal will allow you to view applications, post notes for applicants and apprentices, and see if Learning Contracts have been filed. You may also renew or revise your project at the portal, and see if your grant has been transferred.
ACADEMIC YEAR APPLICATION
On line applications for faculty are now open for Spring 2010. Spring project listings will be posted for students near the end of the fall term and we urge faculty to submit projects by the last day of the term for best exposure and applicant pool. Although we will accept projects until the start of the spring administrative term --Tuesday, January 12, 2010-- projects added that late often have few or no applicants.
October 6, 2009: Due to record-breaking participation in Fall 2009, and the exhaustion of any reserve funds from previous years, we are unable to offer grants to faculty who are just now signing up for Spring 2010. We regret that we cannot offer funding, and hope that will not deter you from posting a project for apprentices.
Student applications open on the first day of the administrative term, and close early in the second week of classes. The Spring 2010 application period for students will be Tuesday, January 12th through Monday, January 25th.

FACULTY HANDBOOK The URAP Faculty Handbook offers an extensive description of the program, guidelines for success, and necessary forms.
CALENDAR Important dates in the URAP cycle are noted in our Faculty Calendar: Fall 2009(pdf) and Spring 2010(pdf).
LEARNING CONTRACTS Each semester, the URAP faculty mentor and the undergraduate apprentice must sign a Learning Contract outlining roles and expectations--whether or not they enroll for units. Contracts are now completed on-line for new and continuing apprentices.
SUMMER APPLICATIONS There are no new URAP projects listed in the summer, but there is usually funding available for continuing URAP faculty and apprentices. Faculty who participate in URAP during the fall AND spring semester may nominate a current apprentice to receive a SUMMER work stipend. Eligible faculty will be notified in mid-February about summer funding.
MENTORING UNDERGRADUATES: (1) faculty share techniques, perspectives; (2) quick tips from successful projects.
