Measuring Attentional Bias Toward Alcohol Cues Using MouseView: The Moderating Role of Natural Stress

Alcohol use disorder devastates communities that remain invisible and marginalized in research including my own. Growing up in Kazakhstan, I witnessed how addiction reshapes families in silence, without the language or tools to understand what was happening. My Haas Scholars thesis examines attentional bias in alcohol use disorder using MouseView, an innovative webcam-free eye-tracking method that captures where the mind drifts when presented with alcohol-related cues. I will conduct two studies with college student samples, using the AUDIT and AUQ to measure alcohol use patterns alongside cognitive behavioral data. Crucially, I am building an open-source Russian and Kazakh adaptation of MouseView to extend this research into critically understudied Central Asian populations. MouseView requires no expensive equipment, making it uniquely accessible for researchers in low-resource settings.
