Designing a Standard Operating Procedure for the KCNE1:KCNQ1 complex

In my project, I aim to design a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the structural determination of the KCNE-1:KCNQ-1 complex. KCNQ-1 is a potassium ion channel that is instrumental in the re-polarization and proper functioning of the heart. Defects in KCNQ-1 have resulted in long-QT syndrome, which is characterized by longer than normal re-polarization of the heart muscles.

KCNQ-1, in its active form, functions as a tetramer, a complex of four active subunits. Additionally, its activity is influenced by interactions with regulatory proteins like KCNE-1. My research will be focused on the development of a SOP for determining the structure of the KCNE-1:KNCQ-1 complex. Through the study of the structure of the ion channel complex, researchers will be able to better understand how KCNE-1 regulates KCNQ-1 activity, a crucial step in treating Long QT syndrome and other cardiac disorders.

Message To Sponsor

Structural biology has been a growing interest of mine, and I am really appreciative of this opportunity for me to explore that interest with this project. Additionally, I greatly appreciate the opportunity that has been granted to me and other undergraduates to pursue our research projects. This year has been especially stressful for many in the research community, making every bit of support appreciated! Thank you!
