Reclaiming Uncertainty: How Post-Apocalypse Narratives Inform the Ex-vangelical Experience

Scholars Journal

How does literary uncertainty overlap with the rejection of Christian fundamentalism? There is a before and after to leaving the church, and because this experience can feel like the collapse of a world, it thematically parallels post-apocalypse narratives. Janzy’s project investigates two types of books: secular post-apocalypses and those that circulate among evangelicals – to understand uncertainty’s role in these kinds of stories. Reading requires the feeling of not knowing or being in between, but what does this mean for people who have left the church? What happens when we apply the framework of uncertainty to both Christian and secular apocalypses? Shifting between two versions of truth is a constant for an ex-vangelical navigating their new world, and embracing uncertainty might be vital to the process.
