Instagram Algorithm and the Reproduction of Criminal Risk in Reentry Populations

Scholars Journal

This study examines how Instagram's personalized recommendation algorithm may curate and amplify content that reinforces criminogenic influence among individuals navigating reentry after incarceration. Since algorithms respond to engagement patterns, people in reentry may be exposed to recommendations tied to violence, criminal activity, or deviance at a critical moment of behavioral change. Using a mixed methods design, including an algorithmic audit across Los Angeles zip codes, platform content analysis, and semi-structured interviews with justice involved individuals, this project will bridge digital sociology and criminology to conceptualize algorithmic recommendation as a structural component of reentry. Findings aim to advance recidivism discourse and inform future policy around digital platform accountability.
