Arianne Marcellin-Little

Transcription and Translation of New Orleans Francophone Newspapers

This summer, I’ll be reviewing French and English language newspapers from the Civil War and Reconstruction periods. These publications include L’Union (1862-1864) and the Tribune (founded in 1864). My work will involve identifying, transcribing, and translating articles of interest on the topics of slavery and freedom, race and government, law and equal protection, philosophy, and the politics or destiny of African Americans.

Message To Sponsor

Thank you for supporting this rewarding research experience. This summer, I’ve had the opportunity to trace a compelling sociopolitical and legal dialogue throughout issues of the newspaper L’Union, expanding my historical understanding and illuminating connections with contemporary social movements. I’m very grateful to have become a more confident and conscientious translator through this summer’s work, and to now be better prepared for the reading and reasoning required during law school.
