Myopia Control

I will work on examining the aftereffects of induced myopia through monocular lens, both in duration and magnitude. My project will use chicks as models in order to observe the gene expression levels in the chick retinal pigment epithelium, a thin cell layer right next to the retina, after termination of treatment. The treatment and magnitudes will also use either positive (convex) and negative (concave) lens for different periods of time to observe the differing levels of gene expression dependent on the lens.

Research has been such a large part of my college experience since I joined in sophomore year, and I feel like I have learned and grown so much since then. It has allowed me to push beyond my limits in regards to what I know and what I am able to achieve. As such, being able to continue research under Dr. Wildsoet is such a great honor and I am extremely grateful to have been able to give even more time to do the research that I enjoy. This experience has given me a much more detailed look into every aspect of research conducted in a laboratory, ranging from reading up on papers as well as writing out ideas and drafts for papers, as well as conducting and analyzing experiments. As a result I feel like I have a much more holistic view of research, and feel more driven to continue conducting research. I want to thank the Chandra Fund because with their help I was able to focus my summer purely on research and work faster than I ever have before. I worked with my principle investigator and learned more techniques than I ever have before, and really honed my writing and reading skills. I am currently working on writing a paper for a project that I was able to accomplish this summer. I learned so much this summer and thank the Chandra Fund for sponsoring me!
